A vow renewal ceremony script

Runtime: 12–15 minutesUpdated July 2026

Bracketed lines are directions to perform, not lines to read aloud.

Gathering 1–2 min

[The couple takes their place together, facing the officiant and their guests. If there’s a processional, they may walk in together rather than separately.]

Welcome 2 min

Welcome, everyone, and thank you for being here. Please, be seated.

We’re not here today to marry [Partner A] and [Partner B] — life already did that, [X years] ago. We’re here for something rarer, and in its own way braver: to watch two people who’ve actually lived the promise stand up and make it again, on purpose, knowing exactly what they’re signing up for.

Anyone can promise “for better or worse” on a wedding day, when it’s all still theory. [Partner A] and [Partner B] have met the worse and the better both — [nod to what these years have held: children, moves, a hard season, ten thousand ordinary Tuesdays] — and they’re still choosing each other. That’s what we came to celebrate.

The years behind you 2–3 min

Marriage isn’t one promise; it’s the same promise, kept ten thousand times, on ordinary days no one photographs. [Partner A] and [Partner B], the life you’ve built is made of those days — [name a few true, specific things from their years together: a home, children by name, a hard season survived, a private joke that became a family language].

You know things now you couldn’t have known at the beginning: that love is less a feeling you fall into than a thing you decide, again and again; that the person you married keeps becoming someone new, and that this is a gift, not a threat. You’re not renewing an old promise out of habit today. You’re making it again with your eyes fully open.

Honoring family 1–2 min

[If the couple’s children or family are part of the ceremony, the officiant invites them forward or acknowledges them now.]

The years [Partner A] and [Partner B] are celebrating have a few witnesses who were made by this marriage. [Children’s names], your parents want you to know that the promise they’re renewing today is a promise to you, too — to keep building the home you all share.

The renewal of vows 2–3 min

[Partner A] and [Partner B], please take each other’s hands and say again, to each other and to all of us, what you’ve already proven you mean. [Partner A], repeat after me.

I, [Partner A], took you as my [wife / husband / partner] [X years] ago — and knowing everything I didn’t know then, I’d choose you again without hesitating. I promise to keep loving you as you are and as you become, and to keep building our life with the same stubborn joy, for all the years still ahead. You’re still my answer.

And [Partner B], repeat after me.

I, [Partner B], took you as my [wife / husband / partner] [X years] ago — and knowing everything I didn’t know then, I’d choose you again without hesitating. I promise to keep loving you as you are and as you become, and to keep building our life with the same stubborn joy, for all the years still ahead. You’re still my answer.

Blessing the rings 1 min

The rings you’ve worn all these years have quietly kept your promise on your hands through every day of this marriage. Wear them now with the promise renewed — the same circles, the same vow, freshly spoken.

A blessing for the years ahead 1 min

[Partner A] and [Partner B], you were married long before today, and you’re married still — but now with your promise spoken again, in front of everyone who’s watched you keep it. May the years ahead be as full as the years behind, and may you keep choosing each other, gladly, all the way through. Go on — seal it with a kiss.

[The couple kisses, to applause.]

Recessional 1 min

Everyone, please raise a hand, a glass, or a cheer for [Partner A] and [Partner B] — married [X years], and clearly just getting started.

[The couple leads the way out, to the guests’ applause.]
